Preview – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

  11th-13th November
Circuit
Race distance
55 laps / 305.355 km
Schedule
Qualifying 17:00 hrs, Race 17:00 hrs local time (13:00 hrs GMT)

James Key, Technical Director (Sauber) :

Abu Dhabi was a memorable race last year when the championship was won there. One factor in that race was overtaking was difficult. That’s something we have to bear in mind this year, although DRS should support overtaking. But certainly it will be an interesting race where the strategy could play a role. We go there with the soft and medium tyres, which is the same combination we had in Suzuka. The track itself has got three very distinct sectors. The first one is a short sector with medium to high speed corners. The second is dominated by a couple of chicanes and two long straights, so there low drag and efficiency are important. The third sector requires high downforce for the slow to medium speed corners. Therefore getting the downforce level right and balance it for this track is an important part of Friday’s work. The car will be the same specification we had in India. We have, however, several new approaches to some of the mechanical set-up, coming off the back of a difficult qualifying in India, where we just couldn’t get the tyres to work. We think Abu Dhabi will be better for this, but nevertheless we looked into this in detail and we will go with some fresh ideas to make sure we’ve got everything covered if tyres are the problem. In the race in India we got back to where we should be competition wise, and we clearly also need to be at that level in qualifying in Abu Dhabi.”
Colin Kolles, Team Principal (HRT) : “We had quite an encouraging weekend in India, showing a much better pace than our direct rivals, and we are looking forward to Abu Dhabi to round it off. However, we have to keep our feet on the ground, focus on ourselves and do our job properly. If we do, I am sure we can hope for a good result at the Yas Marina Circuit. The event was fantastic last year, a really impressive facility with great atmosphere. For the first time, Daniel will drive at a racetrack that he has already been before with a Formula 1 as he was one of the young drivers participating in the post-race test. He actually had an impressive performance and, although this time will be a different situation, I am confident that this can allow him to kick the weekend off from a better position. Tonio will be back in the car this weekend and he is highly motivated. I am sure that we will see an interesting Grand Prix. The team’s performance has improved th roughout the season and the last races have been particularly positive for us. We certainly are in a much better position than we were eight months ago and I hope that we will continue this way until the end”.

Sauber – British GP – Qualifying – Saturday, 09.07.2011

Sauber F1 Team

Press release

British GP – Qualifying – Saturday, 09.07.2011
Weather: Overcast with rain showers, 17-20°C air, 16-23°C track
Despite some pretty fickle English weather, the Sauber F1 Team had its best qualifying result of the season for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Pérez capitalised on a good third free practice to be eighth and 12th respectively in qualifying. While Q1 started in the dry, a sudden rain shower came before they could change from hard to soft tyres, but this did not bother either Sauber C30-Ferrari as they both had comfortable margins for getting through to Q2. Pérez missed out on Q3 by one of the smallest margins possible, while eighth was the best result for Kobayashi in his F1 career.
Kamui Kobayashi:
Sauber C30-Ferrari (Chassis 01 / Ferrari 056)
Qualifying: 8th/1:32.128 min (in Q3, soft tyres) / 3rd Practice: 7th/1:33.014 min
“It was a tricky qualifying with the constantly changing conditions. It was extremely difficult to predict what would be right and what would be wrong, but we have handled this quite well. In Q1 I struggled a bit because I wasn’t used to the car’s balance on the hard tyres, and didn’t have a chance to do a lap on the soft compound because the rain set in. In Q2 the track conditions were still tricky and damp, but in Q3, when I did my final lap on fresh soft tyres, everything worked out the way it should do. I am happy with this lap and I am especially thankful to my team because, due to their hard work, we recovered from what happened on Friday morning. Now I want to make the most of all this in tomorrow’s race.”
Sergio Pérez:
Sauber C30-Ferrari (Chassis 02 / Ferrari 056)
Qualifying: 12th/1:32.624 min (in Q2, soft tyres) / 3rd Practice: 9th/1:33.264 min
“I think we did a good job today. It is a shame to miss Q3 by 36 thousandths of a second, but I’m quite happy with our performance. Because of the changing conditions it was not an easy qualifying. Overall here our car is good. This is thanks to some improvements but also down to the circuit. The high speed corners suit us quite well. From where I will start the race I have every chance to score points tomorrow, and I am very much looking forward to my first British Grand Prix.”
Peter Sauber, Team Principal:
“It has become even more difficult to get into the top ten, and this means you are going to be even happier when you make it. Congratulations to Kamui and his crew, as today timing was also very important. Sergio’s 12th place is also alright, and he has saved a set of fresh tyres for the race.”
James Key, Technical Director:
“I think all in all it was a reasonable day. This morning we had the first dry running of the weekend, so there was a lot of work to do. A lot of the test items from Friday had to be carried over to a very busy third free practice, but we pretty much proved everything we needed to, which was good. In qualifying it was tricky, as the conditions were very, very variable and quite difficult to predict, even though we had radar showing that the rain was quite light. It would have been great to get both cars into Q3, but we got one so we can’t complain at all. Sergio did a great job to be 12th, and Kamui did very well to get through. Our position is okay, although it would have been nice to be a little bit further ahead, but we know our race pace is very strong compared to our qualifying pace so we will be looking to make the most of our starting positions tomorrow.“

Williams FW33 – Aiming return to glorious past days with new innovative car

February 12, 2011 4 comments

Williams presented the 2011 F1 contender , the FW33 at Valencia in 1st February 2011 . The new FW33 was painted in an interim dark blue livery , something Williams accustomed to before launching its normal paint theme .

Looking FW33 from the front gives you the impression that little have changed on the car since last year but a side and rear view of the car proves that the team aggressively designed and built the new car

The FW33 launched at Valencia is regarded to be a “launch” spec as many serious upgrade packages will complete and improve the car’s performance and Sam Michael , Williams technical director , even believes that during season  will manage to gain back any aerodynamic loss caused by the new 2011 regulations  .

Front zone – Nose

At the front little changes took place , the nose box is a bit wider and higher than before,  with winglets ala “hammerhead shark” pattern ( see  link  https://formula1techandart.wordpress.com/2010/09/18/williams-fw32-nose-cone-details/ ) inherited by the F32 and a front wing also derived from the FW32 .However the nose pillars are now inclined forward to push the front wing away from the nose cone aiming  a cleaner airflow onto the wing’s flaps .

Middle zone

The new oversized in the front sidepods due to KERS re-installation with a tighter  bodyline closing to the car centre  offer a different airstream towards the car rear and thus the team had to redesign both the bargeboard and the panel shape .

Major changes occurred at the airbox zone with the engine inlet to be now circular instead of triangular and lot of bodywork to be removed behind the driver’s helmet to reduce frontal surface and hence drag . To ensure structural stiffness  a pair of pillars was added . Lastly the second inlet which helped to cool the gearbox radiator located  behind the T-shaped camera , is now gone from the FW33 .

Rear zone

The team managed to construct the smallest ever 7-speed gearbox even though the gearbox endurance is now increased from 4 to 5 races this year . This aggressive structural approach gave permission to aero dynamists to construct a fabulous low and compact rear car end , the smallest in 2011 grid . The target is to clean dramatically the airflow passing over the rear beam wing and the diffuser roof  causing a serious increase in downforce production .

The ultra low rear end effected the rear suspension design as well . The new suspension  is totally new and a pull rod in contrast to the previous push rod with the top wishbones ( in yellow) to attach directly onto the rear wing’s single pillar , something innovative for F1 .  The differential (in orange ) is also very inclined because of the low gearbox line ‘

Talking about the double diffuser ban Sam Michael said : : “Not only can you not open any holes between the reference and step planes, you must have continuous material through all lateral and longitudinal sections. The scope for developing anything on the diffuser is limited, so we’re looking at the centre, rear and front of the floor, as well as the sides of the floor and the little area around the tyre spat, all of which are still free.”

Engine – KERS

The Cosworth engine continues to power Williams for a second season in row . As regards KERS Williams will eventually use a Battery charged unit instead of the flywheel Williams Hybrid Power (WHP) . The components are entirely inside the car’s survival cell, below the fuel tank because as team said they did not want to compromise any of the sidepod area for aerodynamics .

The make enough room inside the monocoque  to house  KERS batteries and components without effecting a lot the sidepods , the team lengthened the front chassis volume quite a lot , a change visually spotted with a yellow arrow  .

Tyres – Wheels

Pirelli replaced Bridgestone while the wheels are supplied by RAYS and are made of forged magnesium alloy
