Red Bull RB7 – getting green at Jerez (February test)
To compare wind tunnel data with real track aero performance , Red Bull tried a yellow-green flow visualization paint on the car at Jerez . Mechanics mix fluorescent paint with paraffin oil and then place the mixture with the assist of a portable device on car key areas like sidepods , diffuser , nose , etc The flow-vis paint at high speed flows with the airstream making visual the path of the air on the car . The visual outcome reveals possible areas where air is disturbed or detaches from the car body . Another way to understand real time aerodynamics of the car is to use pitot rakes but with this procedure mechanics can not trace and study air flowing very close to the body surface .
